PET GROOMING

Regular grooming is important to both dogs and cats.
It is beneficial to both their health and comfort.

Dog Grooming

A dog’s coat will determine the amount and frequency of the grooming needed.  However, one thing that is common to all dogs is the need for nail trimming, ear cleaning and brushing.  A dog’s skin and coat can often be an indicator of his health.  Itchy, flakey skin may be the first sign of a larger problem.  Ear infections and sores are often noticed during grooming.  These problems can then be attended to more quickly before they grow into a bigger problem.   Fleas, ticks, or mites can be identified and eliminated quickly.  More permanent problems such as lumps, growths and weight problem can be watched for changes.

Brushing reduces shedding which means less hair around the house.  It also reduces the chances of the dog’s hair matting.  Not only is matting uncomfortable for the dog; it also can effect the dogs ability to stay warm in the cold weather and cool in the summer.  Air warmed by the dog’s body and trapped next to the skin by the coat acts as insulation and helps to keep the dog warm.  A matted coat does not provide for air circulation and will not keep a dog warm.  In the summer the hair will protect the dog from the heat of the sun.  It will reduce his chances of getting sunburn or heatstroke.

If regular grooming is started at an early age the dog will adapt to it easily and even enjoy it.  Dogs that are not used to being groomed often become stressed by the experience which could lead to aggressive behavior.  Also infrequent grooming leads to a matted dog which then makes it a painful experience.

Therefore, by getting the dog regularly groomed, it helps point out any health issues, helps keep the dog protected against the weather, and reduces a stressful, painful situation.

Cat Grooming

Most cats do a great job keeping themselves clean, but sometimes they may need a little help when it comes to matting.  An overweight cat may have a difficult time keeping his back groomed. Long haired cats may mat if not regularly brushed.

Cats usually do not need baths unless for the following reasons:

Fleas, tick or lice dip
To reduce the allergens in the home

Cat doesn’t take care of its coat

Poison on its fur

Older cat not able to care for itself

Therefore, most cats don’t need regular grooming but there are those special instances where it may be needed.
